Probate Valuations for Estates with Significant Cash Assets
When managing an estate, significant cash assets can represent a large portion of the total estate value. Executors and administrators must understand how to properly identify, document, and value cash holdings as part of the probate valuation process to ensure accurate inheritance tax calculations and legal compliance.
At FEAC Legal Probate Valuations, with over 12 years of specialist experience serving clients across the UK and Scotland, we provide expert guidance and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) compliant probate valuations tailored to estates with substantial cash assets.
Why Accurate Valuation of Cash Assets Matters
Cash assets, including bank accounts, savings, investment accounts, and physical cash holdings, need careful valuation to:
- Accurately calculate the estate’s total value
- Determine the correct inheritance tax (IHT) liability
- Support fair distribution among beneficiaries
- Comply with HMRC reporting requirements
Key Considerations in Valuing Cash Assets
1. Identification of All Cash Holdings
Executors must identify all forms of cash assets, including multiple bank accounts, foreign currency holdings, and cash in safe deposit boxes or within the home.
2. Documentation and Statements
Providing up-to-date bank statements, investment account summaries, and records of cash on hand is essential for accurate valuation.
3. Date of Death Valuation
Cash assets are typically valued at their exact amount on the date of death. Special care is needed if accounts were closed or transactions occurred near this date.
4. Reporting Requirements
Clear documentation of cash assets supports the probate application and HMRC’s inheritance tax return (IHT400).
How FEAC Legal Supports Probate Valuations for Cash Assets
- Thorough asset recovery service to identify all cash and bank holdings
- Liaising with banks and financial institutions to verify balances as of the date of death
- Detailed, HMRC-compliant valuation reports including cash assets

Practical Tips for Executors Handling Cash Assets
- Gather all bank and investment account details early
- Obtain certified statements showing balances on the date of death
- Be aware of foreign currency holdings and their valuation at the date of death
- Keep clear records of any transactions occurring close to the date of death

Probate valuations for estates with significant cash assets require meticulous identification and documentation to ensure compliance and accurate estate administration.
